How to use MyCiTi

MyCiTi is Cape Town’s safe, reliable, convenient bus system. Buses operate up to 18 hours a day. You need a myconnect card, but the system is easy to use once you know how.

Follow these easy steps below or download our New User's Guide here

Step 1 - Get your myconnect card

Everyone needs their own myconnect card to travel. Buy yours for R35 from MyCiTi station kiosks and some shops.

Remember your PIN

Your card comes with a PIN number, which you will need to load money on your card.

Single-trip cards

Once-off users can buy a single-trip card from kiosks and vending machines at selected stations for R30, or R100 for journeys including the Airport. Each card is valid for one journey anywhere on the system, including any transfers.

Step 2 - Load money on your card

myconnect services

There are info terminals at some stations where you can check your balance and get a statement. You can also access these services at selected station kiosks or any Absa ATM. You must enter your PIN to access these services. If you forget your PIN, you can reset it at Absa branches at Heerengracht, Gardens, V&A Waterfront or Table View during banking hours.

Step 3 - Tap in and Tap out

Start your trip
Tap in by holding your card against the validator as you enter a station or board a bus at a stop.

End your trip
Tap out by holding your card against the validator as you leave a station or exit a bus at a stop.

Don’t pay a penalty!
Make sure you use the validators correctly. You will be charged a R25 penalty (or R114 for the Airport):

• If you don’t have enough money for your trip

• If you forget to tap in and tap out

• If you tap the wrong validator

Fares – how much will my journey cost?

You pay for the distance you travel, which is calculated from where you tap in to where you tap out. Click here to calculate your fare.

Plan your journey and save

You pay more in the Peak fare period (weekdays 06:45-08:00 and 16:15-17:30), and less at all other times including weekends and public holidays (the Saver fare period). You are charged Peak or Saver fares depending on when you start your trip.

Changing buses

Change from one route to another, and only pay one fare. Tap out at a station or on a bus and tap in again within 45 minutes to continue your journey. To change buses inside a station, make your way from one bus to another without tapping.
